An AWD system sends power to all four wheels, either all the time or automatically when the vehicle detects a loss of traction. Because the front and rear wheels are connected through the drivetrain, allowing some wheels to roll while others remain stationary can create unnecessary stress on the system.
Traditional wheel-lift towing may be suitable for certain front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive vehicles, but AWD vehicles are different. If two wheels stay on the ground and continue spinning during towing, parts inside the drivetrain may also continue moving without proper lubrication or under conditions they were not designed to handle.
Over time, or even during a single long tow, this can lead to expensive mechanical problems.
A flatbed tow truck carries the entire vehicle on a flat platform. Once the vehicle is loaded and secured, none of its wheels touch the road.
This is especially important for AWD vehicles because it removes the risk of uneven wheel movement during transport. The transmission and drivetrain remain stationary while the vehicle is being moved.
Flatbed towing can also provide better protection for vehicles that have been involved in accidents, have damaged wheels, suffer from suspension problems, or cannot be safely driven.
It is also a good option for low-clearance vehicles, luxury cars, performance vehicles, and vehicles that need to be transported over longer distances.
The exact risk depends on how the vehicle’s drivetrain is designed. Some AWD vehicles may allow limited towing with certain wheels on the ground, while others should never be towed that way.
That is why checking the owner’s manual is always important. Vehicle manufacturers usually provide clear instructions about approved towing methods.
